CYRENS - the swingin' songbook of Cy Coleman

Melbourne Cabaret Festival - Chapel off Chapel - Theatre

Tuesday June 27, Friday June 30, Saturday July 1 - 8.30 pm here

A musical revue celebrating the legendary Broadway composer and jazzman Cy Coleman, known for shows such as Sweet Charity, Barnum, On the Twentieth Century, The Life and City of Angels, but his musical roots were in the jazz world. He was definitely the coolest cat on Broadway!

Cy Coleman’s songs are known for their sophistication and wit. Amanda Harrison ('Wicked'), Chelsea Gibb ('Chicago' and 'Cabaret') and Melissa Langton ('The Fabulous Singlettes') are also known for their sophistication and wit – but more for singing loud and high and knowing how to sing the hell out of a song!

Cyrens is performed with a four piece band, some dangerously close three part harmony, arrangements by Mark Jones and a few jokes and a dash of Bob Fosse., feat. Tamara Murphy bass and Sonja Horbelt drums.

Some two decades ago a trio of Rosa – Horbelt – Sedergreen became the last bastion of live music in Carlton’s famous Lygon Street Strip. They played outside the restaurant Il Primo literally translated as The First One. And recorded a CD of the same title mixing contemporary jazz classics with show tunes. The have somehow stuck together both musically and as friends despite their busy schedules. For this gig the Trio will be joined by Oscar Rosa guitarist/vocalist who has worked with them as The Hottentots.. MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL @ The Malthouse

March 30 - April 8 @ 7pm (Sundays 6pm, no Monday show)  here

Featuring Mark Jones (keyboards), Tristan Courtney (bass) and Sonja Horbelt (drums)

Winner Best Cabaret 2015 NZ Fringe Festival

Winner Best Cabaret Artiste 2014 Green Room Awards

Winner Golden GIbbo Award 2011 Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Fox: red-haired omnivorous species introduced to Australia and widely considered a pest. Adept at getting into and out of sticky situations.

Poncing: magnificent, sparkling self-assured pomp and strut, oftentimes onstage. Reclaimed pejorative.

Bowie is dead. And becoming a songwriter increasingly seems a crap career choice. But Geraldine Quinn (The WeeklySpicks and SpecksRocKwizUpper Middle Bogan) is no quitter. When your hero releases an album two days before carking it, you don’t take breaks.

Fox Poncing bends genres, twists musical and gender stereotypes and asks some hard questions about Australia’s cultural cringe along the way. But most of all it is a suite of new songs from an award-winning cabaret artist who has a frankly baffling amount of bespoke sequinned jumpsuits in her wardrobe.

Geraldine Quinn has been nominated for almost 30 awards in the course of a decade-long career that spans Australia, New Zealand and Edinburgh.

ASH FLANDERS: Playing To Win

Arts Centre Melbourne presents:

ASH FLANDERS: PALYING TO WIN

It's a rumination on failure. It’s gag-a-minute stand-up comedy and an off-the-rails piss-taking of ourselves, our unending crush with celebrity and the feelings of failure when the cameras don’t flash.

Following a highly successful 2015 Melbourne Cabaret Festival season, Ash Flanders’ Playing to Win returns for his updated exorcism of shame, this time, with a full band.

Don’t miss a hilarious night of story and song described by The Age as “equal parts Dolly Parton, Liberace and John Waters. Flanders again proves himself an obscenely funny and enviably talented performer”.

★★★★ “Ash Flanders can do anything… see him before he really is too famous for a small room.” - The Age

Geraldine Quinn - Last Gig In Melbourne CD Launch

One city. One songwriter. What if Melbourne were to rock one last time?
Featuring Sonja Horbelt (drums)Martin Lubran (guitar)Kellie Santin (sax)Mark Jones (Keys)Ash Smith (Bass)Casey Bennetto and a special guest support Oliver Clark, this gig is a one-time only event.

DOORS 5.30PM SHOW 6PM

In 2011, rock-cabaret singer-songwriter Geraldine Quinn created a live concept album about local music; its hopes, history, histrionics and hedonism. The Last Gig In Melbourne won the 2011 Green Room Award for Original Songs, and explored liquor licensing, The Peel, getting people to cross the Yarra, Sharps, sticky carpets, pokies, Molly Meldrum, long-lost live venues and the many-eyed monster of multiple smartphones being held up at concerts.
This song cycle was first produced with assistance from City of Melbourne and directed by Casey Bennetto. Five years later, the album (produced with help from many generous crowdfund supporters) can finally be launched where it began – Bella Union.

Yes. Five years.

Put down your phones. It’s happening now.
